So there I was...in the dorm lounge, completely naked, except for pants, a shirt, a sweater, and work boots. I was reflecting upon the day. I gave up studying (staring at my textbook) for physics and accepted the inevitable fate that would be a failing mark. The test is 8:30 in the morning, and I really needed sleep to wake up on time--but I had a craving. I had a sudden urge to eat the Chef Boyardee can that was sitting on my desk for a good week now. But what could be preventing me from eating the unopened lasagna-y goodness?

My roommate was bangin' his girlfriend.

I wrote a blog entry for Joe Davis who lives out in Sarasota now; he's the founder of mobilepreacher.org and he's got a pretty awesome ministry going on there. The link to the blog entry is here.

Christianity gets lame sometimes. Too many churches these days force religion down our throats without getting to the meat of Christianity: revealing Christ’s love in a dying world. So many students get turned off by the style services are held (let’s just say an organ doesn’t really hit the spot in today’s musical realm). But there’s a hope from the monotony that helps hundreds of students come back running, (and no, it’s not Obama). It’s Mobile Preacher. For those of you unfamiliar with this amazing ministry led by Pastor Joe Davis, let me fill you in on 5 important things he taught me to help me in my personal Christian walk.

1. We suck.

As humans, we fall short of our goals and promises so many times. We mess up. But I've seen, visited, and been in churches that generally concede that "us Christians have more morals and are holier than 'the world'" But that's why Mobile Preacher isn't your typical run-of-the mill ministry. They don’t waste time worrying about whether or not you capitalized the "g" in God. They know people fall short of God's glory so many times and know exactly how that feels because they do too. Being a pastor doesn't make anyone "holier" than anyone else, and that was one of the first things Pastor Joe told me about himself—that he's not a high priest; he's a down to earth guy who loves Jesus and wants to spread that message to hurting and lost.

2. It’s cool to question your faith,

as much as you want, and as hard as you want. "Cause god is still sovereign. He saved you, you didn't choose him; he will keep you." Those were words from Pastor Joe himself. Lots of us feel like people will criticize us and get mad if we have any doubts about where we stand with our Savior. But that's not the case at all and; I've learned that having questions about your faith is what makes you stronger and more affirmed in what you believe in, so all you "faith doubters" out there can rest easy.

3. Praying can be fun!

Did you know you didn't have to say amen at the end of a prayer? What about the fact that kneeling down doesn't make you any more holy than thou art? These trivial things that make our connection with God so much more complicated are the things that Pastor Joe and his ministry want to get rid of. A lot of students get completely twisted ideas of prayer; they don't know how to begin, where to start. Talking to God should be just like it is...TALKING.

4. Not Religion, Relationship

I don't know about you but I'm sick of going to church over and over again ritualistically and gaining nothing. How often do you hear students my age going to church because they want to not because they have to. It's a sad reality, more and more kids are chasing after worldly things and even religious things and forget what they're REALLY missing out on in life: a relationship with our heavenly Dad. Mobile Preacher realizes that the youth of today see beyond the frail foundations of religion and are looking for so much more out of life; it reaches out to the youth in a sincere and engaging way. We're tired of faking it--we want our Jesus back not overused colloquialisms that are drilled into our heads. And finally...

5. Jesus is NOT my boyfriend!

Jesus is my Savior, He's my King. He's not someone I would get flowers and chocolates from for Valentine's day (although Jesus chocolate would probably be an awesome idea). He's the one who washes feet, schools Pharisees, and makes great wine. Listen, all I'm saying is to stop taking the fact that we're the "bride of Christ" so literally.

I was so lucky, or blessed, rather, when he was here in New York. No one should hold back this clear gift from God for the hurting kids in Sarasota, and even across the nation. Don't overlook the opportunity to support this amazing ministry that's truly God inspired and fueled by love. And besides, Pastor Joe can whip you at basketball.
